5th October 2010 - A nice wander in the lakes...

...I went to meet Chris on friday evening after a pants day - but I got to Penrith in record time and all was good, we stayed at the quiet site http://www.thequietsite.co.uk/ in one of their pod things, was pretty disappointed to be honest, but seeing as I was driving out to pick up chris from Penrith station off a national distress bus at 12.40AM it seemed to not matter so much

After a chilly nights sleep, we got up and went to morrisons cafe for a good bacon roll and coffee and to stock up on food, before heading into Gelnridding, where we started our walk up Helvellyn, via striding edge :)

The walk up we did on our own route off of the tracks which was pretty nice and definitely worth not taking the tourist path for the number of people there seemed to be! There was a bit of a slog just gaining height but then when we got to the ridge, I proceeded to find the sketchiest route possible across the very highest point I could find and it was well worth it, almost a climb at the end too :) well happy :)

Light started to fade as we headed down, by the time we got off the hill it had been dark for an hour maybe two so we got out the headtorch (singular as i dont own a decent one!)

A picture from google because we had a fail in taking one from the top of striding edge :) lol (martinlawrencephotography.com from a google images search)

After a day doing all that hard graft (ahem) we went off to set up camp and head to the Travellers Rest pub around the corner for a celebratory dram and some grub. All in all a well worthwhile day :)
