Stob Coire nan Lochan - Dorsal Arete

Setting off from Kinlochleven to the car park for 7.30am, we set off with a view to climbing Dorsal Arete on Stob Coire nan Lochan. Well, first winter climbing day or not, i genuinely felt like keeling over on the walk in but we eventually got there along with the many other climbers that were on the way up too which we later found out included Oban Mountain Rescue!

Ive pasted in a picture below, its usually described as a ridge just to the right of broad gully in an s shape winding from the dashed arrow up to the top where the solid arrow points at the top of the route. The arete was a very busy route and pretty deep in snow but with the pitches getting harder the further up you go, it was more rewarding the further up we went so we remained in good spirits to get up to the top behind Oban MRT despite the waiting about at belays etc. Nice options for belays, even with other people on the route using the same belay points, and a nice route too :)

We topped out for a clear, sunny summit, a flask of tea and caramel slices and congratulated ourselves with the other guys :) Needless to say, the walk back wasnt as bad but i spent most of it fallen over and having bashed into something much to my frustration...! And i did get to practice sliding on my bum and arresting the slide with an axe which was funny! It made the day complete for the child inside of me who just wanted to roll down the hills in any case! Finally once back to the car, and i found out what gubbed really means, we took ourselves off to the Clachaig for a good helping of hot chocolate, and haggis neeps and tatties :) YUM
