SCA Freestyle Discipline Support Module....

...a paddling intervention in disguise!

I hadn't intended at all to be getting back on the water this week but that exactly whats happened! Hurrah! I began the week with the usual Monday run, and didnt for a minute see myself actually paddling half as much as I did.

Session on Tuesday was awesome, I walked in to find Dennis Newton sat there as well which was a nice surprise! Its been a while and I'm surprised he even recognised me to be honest! Decided I was going to get on the water tonight and I was dead nervous actually, of a wee run down pinkston! I felt like a right beginner, did a few laps in the end and didn't try any moves in the top hole but I did try a ferry or two and got rolling on both sides! YEY! Feeling a bit sore I went over to the side to watch Den and Bruce ripping it up...it was like a big front loop competition and lots of moves i can't even name! Great to watch, great buzz from everyone, such a nice night if a tad chilly!

Wednesday morning was a nice relaxing start with lots of coffee and biccies with Bruce with his instructor hat on which is new for me and Den, leading the course. Introductions and stuff aside, we got into the meat of the module which was so much more than i was expecting it to be. The ethos of the whole thing was to pass on the fundamental building blocks of freestyle moves so that we can all pass them on to our freestyle sessioners. I feel as though that this is just the boost we needed. We've always been trying to help each other out, but this course totally nailed it. It gives us the ability to run good solid sessions as a precursor to busting out some moves on the course, and man, i shouldn't have asked for a better first day on the water. Den and Bruce together walked us through the basic movements that you need to break down those complicated freestyle moves, and break them down into manageable bits to work on. I got lots of stuff to work on and spent all day at it too. Awesome. Half of us were front looping off of the side of the jetty within a few goes with a brilliant combination of land, flat water and whitewater environments. On the WW course, I was a bit hesitant but I was in the hole with everyone else, albeit trying to find my surf legs but i definitely initiated the loop when I got the chance and I was knackered by the end! Regaining control is definitely the next thing for me :D

Then, cause I had such a great day on the water, i pleaded with work to let me out to play on Thursday which they did and that was great too. Not as feel-good as the previous day as I wasn't able to get on the features which was mega frustrating but, it will come with time. For the moment i keep paddling off to the left hand side as I can paddle harder on my left surprise surprise. It was a cold day, but lots of rolls, lots of dailies, lots of shooting through holes and regaining my stability. I still wouldn't go out alone on the clyde wave or whatever but id certainly be MUCH happier going now. I couldn't have asked for a better first day on the river with the tips, tricks and motivation pouring in from Bruce and Den all day. Epic. I spent 6 hours of the day driving to and from the Garry, bumping into faces ive not seen in ages, a lot of paddling, a lot of rolling, coffee and cake on the way home, and had an ad-hoc meeting about WWPF with the ice factor on the way back too....very productive day for me. Ploughing into the hole, albeit not great freestyle moves but to be piling in with relatively no fear of the shoulder...wonderful stuff.

These two days have made me feel much better about recovery now. Roll on the rest of 2016 and some boating soon!!

p.s. on the way through Glencoe in the morning and then on the way back in the afternoon....clearly Scottish winter hasn't abandoned us just yet!!

Until next time....... :D
