Recovery - Part III - Back on the water!
8/8/12
So, ive got my mobility back mostly by now. My hands are back over my head without any pain and out to the sides and backwards. I appear to have lost a fair bit of lateral rotation, much emphasised by the fact that i gave a sort of hi-5 at waist level to Andy from work who was cycling past when i went out running and BOOM...oops. Other than that a few minor twinges when running when ive lost my footing or reaching for stuff on top of the cupboards in the kitchen and that's it :) they hurt a lot at the time but you just shake them out a bit and its been fine. All good now except occasional twinges when i am pulling a shirt on/off etc but its all looking quite nice now!
Have been to the gym a few times, and had a go on the rower on a very light weight a couple of weeks back as a test, and did cycling/running, sit ups etc as normal. Now im at a stage where ive started to strengthen the rotator cuff muscle by having small weights in hand, or putting pressure on it against a wall etc.
Ive been speaking to everyone that will listen about the injury, and also been trying to identify the best way to help my body recover, which began by waiting to see the physiotherapist at the hospital last week before consulting a private one. However, to be honest, as nice a bloke as he was, he didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, do any tests that I hadnt already been keeping track of, and didn't actually find the loss of lateral (aka external) rotation - I had to show it to him ... so im afraid ive not got a lot of faith in him now! Feel a bit harsh, but it wasn't very reassuring!

Also decided to try out physio tape too, its pretty wicked stuff, sticks to you pretty good as long as you dont pull it off to adjust it at any point, and, drum roll.... I GOT BACK ON THE WATER! It was Sunday the 5th, and only a canal, but a month on from the injury, back in a boat and pottering about testing my shoulder out! Forwards oaddling was ok, backwards hurt a lot, sideways strokes were ok too. It was really great to get back on after what feels like an eternity. Came off after half an hour or so when i started to ache, but still - i was happy and then we went for a curry...was a good sunday :)
