Ouse in Spate 28/09/2012

Friday evening, the Ouse was MASSIVE! Its been raining for days and the news is reporting widespread flooding around York, half the city is closed to traffic and getting in and out in a car is a nightmare. So, what the hell, lets go paddle the river! They reckon its the highest level in 12 years, this has to be done! So, Rich, Tom, Jo and I all got our stuff together and missioned it to the YCC boathouse where we got on the 'gnarly Ouse'!! We giggled like little children as we paddled down sidestreets, over peoples front gardens that are normally at a guess about 10ft above the normal water level....I did have a think about the devastation that this flood has caused, but i couldnt help myself enjoying it! We paddled the short section from the YCC boathouse just up from Marygate, to millennium bridge, and back up the path (!) to Jo's house (!) where we got off at the botton of her street (normally a set of stairs!). We took photos from the evening, when we were able to touch the inside of the bridges with our paddles, and paddle into car parks and even down sidestreets where we met the fire service brielfy....so much fun but gives you a great respect for the power of even a placid river like the Ouse... Wont get that opportunity for a while, i think the photos have been lost but I've put on a few that i have :) Awesome way to spend a Friday evening! Thanks guys!
