Yorkshire Freestylin' 16th - 18th November
So this weekend, I went along to a Yorcie BCU coaching/ development weekend at Aldwark scout centre to do a weekend of freestyling with Claire O'Hara....ive been excited about this for months at this point and I wasnt feeling myself Friday night but my friend Dean (aka THE EDGE(deep voice mandatory just so you know)) coaxed me out of York to the scout centre and to a wee dram. The Saturday morning saw a 730am breakfast and an early start, driving to Tees Barrage. We were changed ready to roll from the minute it opened, to the minute it closed.
We went around playing about the long course, and at lunch the short course, and for me the first moving water experience for my playboat! The drop at the bottom of the short course was interesting...!
The Saturday was a hard day for me, I spent a bit of time being a bit of a scaredy cat, but I rolled my new boat, in anger, for the first time, lots of times which was invaluable even if it was for that alone - but you know how your headspace can get sometimes! Got minimal surfing done but the confidence in the boat was feeling much better and that was awesome so i came away happy nonetheless :)
Evening saw Claire give us all a sneak peek at her Grand Canyon trip and a talk about boat outfitting which was great fun! We started the next day with mandatory breakfast 730am start and a day out on the Middle Tees, from Whorlton Lido down to Winston. This was a really great day. I got surfing done, got my first flat spin and was feeling ok, and still rolling the boat up!
By the end of the day I could barely get the boat back up and i decided that perhaps enough was enough! But still, i went home although not having achieved perhaps what i wanted, what i needed to. So im happy enough for now. Claire has given me some drills to work on on the flat/pool which i will dutifully do and with her enthusiasm and her support even for those two days im hoping to get somewhere soon....watch this space!
Claire even missed the Hurley Classic just for us....thank you so much dude :) hope to catch you on the river sometime!
